Ira Berlin
This year, the annual meeting of the Southern Historical Association is hosting a plenary panel on the teaching and scholarship of Ira Berlin. I am honored to participate and share what I know of his work. My comments are going to be about Ira as a synthesizer, and author of BIG books. I am still working out what I am going to say, and to do that I’m going back to his scholarship. In addition to the titles you can see in the photos, I am reading two of his articles as well:
Berlin, Ira. “From Creole to African: Atlantic Creoles and the Origins of African- American Society in Mainland North America.” The William and Mary Quarterly 53, no. 2 (1996): 251–88. https://doi.org/10.2307/2947401.
